2019 Polish Film, a biographical film about Polish jazz pianist Mietek Kosz, who created a world-class score. Looking inward, it is a deeply touching film about loneliness. The depth of its content makes the viewer stop for a long time.
A world ceased to exist for him, but a new world opened for him. The shadow of Mietek Kosz is still little known, and it has been said that jazz is not one of the most popular musical genres in Poland and the world, even the director of the film, before shooting, had a lot to say about the legend. Not much is actually known. Some characters somehow don’t take the popular consciousness easily, like Todriguez in Finding Sugar Man, maybe, you need to meet the right person and a lucky moment at the same time
Ikar legenda Mietka Kosza is a film immersed in sound, a portrait of a man who speaks of the devastating loneliness deep inside him. The darkness brought about by the sudden blindness, as if the whole world was far from Mietek, when he still had a dim vision, his mother taught him to use the keys to memorize red, yellow, and even the color of the sky. These sounds transported him to a new world, where music became his escape and his salvation at the same time. The biographical narrative employed by director Maciej Pieprzyca is not just formal, it is emotional. The director meticulously captured some special sound effects, trying to imitate the sensitivity of Mietek’s hearing. In the film, you can even hear the tiniest whispers. Mietek’s film avatar was created by piecing together snippets of stories told by his friends, anecdotes, and some recordings and interviews. However, the director did not forget to manage to create a heartbreaking portrait of a wounded beautiful soul, in order to bring a deeper shock beyond the biographical narrative
In my opinion, “Ikar legenda Mietka Kosza” is even the best movie to explain the core of jazz
