“I don’t think he’s gone, he’s just set off to the clouds”
In 2019, Poland’s biographical film about Polish jazz pianist Mietek Kosz creates a world-class cinematic score. Reflecting inwards, it is an insightful and sophisticated film about loneliness. The depth of its content makes its viewers linger.
One world no longer exists, but soon another opens up for him. Mietek Kosz is still known by a few. it was once said that jazz was never one of the most popular genres of music in Poland or around the world. Even the director of the film didn’t know much about the legendary figure before the film’s production. Somehow there are always characters who don’t easily enter the attention of the mass, like Rodriguez in “In Search of Sugar Man”, perhaps, you need to meet both the right person and a lucky moment.
Ikar Legenda Mietka Kosza is a film immersed in sound, a portrait of a man who speaks of the devastating loneliness deep inside him. The darkness was brought about by sudden blindness as if the whole world was far away from Mietek, when he still had a dim vision, his mother taught him to use the keys to memorize red, yellow, and even the color of the sky. These sounds took him to a new world, where music became his escape and his salvation at the same time. The biographical narrative employed by director Maciej Pieprzyca is not just formal, it is emotional. The director has meticulously captured some special sound effects, trying to imitate the sensitivity of Mietek’s hearing. In the film, you can even hear the tiniest whispers. Mietek’s film avatar was created by piecing together snippets of stories told by his friends, anecdotes, and some recordings and interviews. However, the director did not forget to manage to create a heartbreaking portrait of a wounded beautiful soul, in order to bring a deeper shock beyond the biographical narrative.
In my opinion, “Ikar Legenda Mietka Kosza” is even the best movie to explain the core of jazz
