CHEN YIFAN·《Turning Point》 5/11

In 2019, Chen Yifan released his first solo original saxophone album “Seagull”. In the past four years, Chen Yifan’s aesthetics and playing style have undergone radical changes, which are shockingly reflected in his new original jazz album “Turning Point”!

The album consists of 12 songs, all of which are original compositions written by Chen Yifan, except for the remixes of the famous Chinese songs “Nanniwan” and “The River Runs Through It”. Each track in the album is a unique deconstruction and innovation of the musical form, especially the album’s eponymous track “Turning Point”, which skillfully utilizes a wealth of musical elements, matched with the careful layout of the strings, elevating the entire work to an admirable artistic height. Turning Point marks a bold exploration of the depths of modern jazz elements. The intertwining of classical and modern elements brings an unprecedented sense of three-dimensionality and layering, and further establishes the work’s unique position among the first saxophone works written in such a configuration in China.

Chen Yifan is not only the producer of this album, but also responsible for the entire production and arrangement work, leading the entire album creation and production process, and invited more than ten outstanding musicians to participate in the recording, under their wonderful performance, the album added rich colors. Of note are the adaptations of two famous Chinese songs, “Nanniwan” and “Water from the River”, which not only reflect Chen Yifan’s unique understanding of the fusion of traditional folk songs and jazz, but also demonstrate his respect and appreciation of traditional musical elements!

In addition, the album contains a series of three songs – “Red Revolution”, including a duet with saxophone and drums, and a trio with bass. All of these musical pieces are presented for the first time in China through this format, and the three songs are closely connected to each other, with musical motifs developed from the end of the previous one

The Inflection Point marks a turning point in Chen Yifan’s musical performance style and symbolizes an important ”inflection point” in the domestic jazz scene. Let’s cross this historic inflection point together and enjoy this feast of modern and traditional music!

Turning Pointt, Album Story

Life, always at some inflection point

Accept that it is from a series of natural and spontaneous changes. When the inflection point occurs, don’t resist, because it doesn’t mean sadness, but reinvention. In the end, let reality be reality, write the inflection point into your personal story, into your music, and we, on the other side of the river, will listen to the reunion of our former selves from this inflection note!
