OIL: 9th Year Anniversary
“OIL Lang Syne” we're turning 9, and we're making our birthday wish on a pun.
Club culture has never been short of names with funny origins, each one a sly little joke: Disco is French discothèque with half of it bitten off; House is said to come from a Chicago club called the Warehouse; Techno was reportedly borrowed from a book on futurism; and before Rave was the name of a party, it meant to talk wildly, or to praise something wildly... Club kids have always had this reckless kind of joy and a knack for growing wherever they land — full of surprises, full of life. Like you, like me, like them.
Nine years of “OIL friendship” was probably never only about the people who became friends. Some of us met through the music, some through the parties, some only ever shared a dancefloor for one set and never learned each other's names. Those moments — brief, but remembered again and again — are what OIL's nine years are made of.
OIL's birthday falls on the first weekend of November. This year, for reasons we didn't plan for, the party is moving to the first weekend of December. Better late than never. There's been a bit more unromantic reality than usual this year, so we're cautiously optimistic — and still hopeful, always.
To all our OIL friends: here's to OIL Lang Syne.
