About GET ON UP, 2014 (screening on 7/17)
Based on the incredible life story of the Godfather of Soul, “Get on Up” focuses more on the details of James Brown’s music, movements and emotions. Like most biopics, “Get on Up” seems to capture only snippets of James’ greatest hits, and a life as rich and complex as James Brown’s would seem to require a full-length HBO series to tell. Chadwick Boseman’s interpretation creates a very believable James Brown. The show is amazingly authentic with Brown’s makeup and hair, and listening to Boseman’s perfect interpretation of Brown’s voice is the real joy of “Get on Up”. The costume design throughout the film also visually highlights the different musical periods Brown went through, from his famous flame outfit to his 70s funk outfit with Bootsy Collins.
Going through each step onto the stage, James Brown recalls a tumultuous childhood in which music was his only constructive release of passion. With his passion and bold creativity, Brown eventually became a superstar. When faced with racism and conventional thinking, he boldly opened up a new possibility for show business. He redefined and elevated the self-awareness and self-worth of the African-American community when the society needed it the most.
