Project R Classical Season: The Immortal Paintings @ ROOTS HOUSE – Nanshan

September 24, 2022 @ 9:00 pm 10:00 pm

Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition is a series of piano works based on famous paintings that are small in themselves but so massive in sound created by Mussorgsky. For millennia, poets have boasted of their ability to immortalize those they revere in poetry, and most of the illuminating works have long since vanished in the ravages of time. And the power of music is more alive, and it is through Mussorgsky’s music that the paintings are forever remembered.

“Picture Exhibition” is a piano suite, composed by Mussorgsky in June 1874. The generation of the suite came from the impression that Mussorgsky visited the picture exhibition of his late friend Hartmann. Hartmann was an outstanding Russian artist and architect. He died suddenly in 1873 at the age of thirty-nine. The art critic Stasov organized an exhibition of his posthumous works. After viewing the exhibition, Mussorgsky , selected the most intimate portraits, genre paintings, and paintings with folk colors from the exhibits, and wrote this piano piece “Picture Exhibition”, in which he poured out his grief and affection for his deceased friends. When writing, Mussorgsky’s inspiration came from a source, and the whole chapter was written almost in a flash. The structure and technique of the whole piece became a model, which immediately attracted the attention and research of many fellow composers. This set of repertoire evolved into generations, and has also been adapted into various versions for performances

The whole set is composed of ten ditties, each of which is based on a picture. It does not simply describe the appearance of the picture, but tries to deeply express the inner thoughts, feelings and artistic conception of the work. The ten small pieces are independent of each other, and the introduction “Wandering” runs through the beginning and the end, linking the feelings of each piece together

Hartmann’s gate may never have been built, but the artistic vision he shared with Mussorgsky eventually became a reality. Mussorgsky’s music may not preserve all of Hartmann’s paintings, but each time the paintings in the exhibition are played, they are given new life again
