Since the turn of the millennium, the burgeoning new soul movement had reached a critical point of commercial breakthrough. But the high point was also the landing point, and it became the peak memory era of this subgenre.
If you plot the route of modern R&B’s foray on a map, you’ll notice a huge fork in the road around 2000. It’s more like a giant roundabout, leading to more and more divided space production. During the next 20 years, no matter what kind of music is not in line with the mainstream in sound, it will be shelved. The reality has confirmed that.
From the 90s to the millennium, Neo Soul, as an alternative voice, spent peaceful brief years with some breakout artists. Between 1995 and 1998, the harbingers of soul music’s revival in urban culture appeared, when sound wave was locked in a seesaw struggle. Throughout the evolution, some behaviors will still stick to basic principles, but at the mainstream level, R&B has moved further and further away from the foundations of soul music. In 1999, the arrival of the Pop&B era was announced, and a rebellion of post-millennial soul music was unveiled.

The initiation of the S O S . Save Our Soul plan originated from the earliest core motivation of ROOTS’ understanding of music. Neo Soul has always been the emotional root of ROOTS, because of its fluctuation, beauty, affection, power, fragility, and strength. It has emotional tensions, so that every note, every whisper, and cry is more powerful than any kind of music. We launched such a plan to evoke the new vitality of the ancient genres that were still in our brain. In each issue of S O S ., we will spare no effort to find musicians who have a crash on Neo Soul.

MI College of Contemporary Music
She learned folk singing from Professor Ling Qingyun of the China National Opera and Dance Theater and Lady in Jazz from Zhan Xiaoyue. She also learned jazz improvisation from French jazz , who is a vocal teacher and American jazz singer Simona De Rosa. Now she is active in jazz circles in Beijing, Guangzhou, and various jazz music scenes.
In 2005, she was invited to participate in the signing ceremony of Sha Baoliang.
In 2014, she was invited to the Midi Music Festival Han Stage·World Stage
In 2015, she was invited to the Rizhao Ocean Music Festival and worked with Huang Xiaohu Dick Cowboy and Cai Jianya
In 2019, she participated in Live Show Discover in Music and The Second Jazz Festival in Shenzhen
In 2020, she participated in the Shandong Jinan Sky Music Festival and the Zhejiang Linhai Natural Wild Music Festival. As the lead singer of the band THE OVAL, she recorded the program “The Voice of Cantonese – Band Storm” on Zhujiang Channel, Guangdong.
KEYBOARD YANHAO ZHOU
He has studied piano since childhood and studied under Wang Bin, a famous musician in the United States. He is good at folk, rock, RnB and other styles. And he has formed a band of more than ten groups, with a solid performance level and musical theoretical foundation. So, he has a certain understanding of musical style, harmony, rhythm, and scale, and is able to perform original or adapted repertoire. He is an easy-going person and serious about music. Now, he is still active in major Live Houses and music festivals in the South.
Bass DUYU LI
He has performed in well-known Live Houses in Beijing, such as Jianghu, The Bricks, DDC, etc.
In 2018, he participated in the recording of Li Weile’s original album “Blossom “
In 2019, he performed the quartet at the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in China and the Embassy of Luxembourg

DRUM HAOHUI LI
Brand ambassador for Mapex Jazz Drum
In 2008, he studied drums from Song Liang and Zhao Nian at the Beijing Midi School
In 2011, he participated in the recording of Dragon TV program, and participated in Strawberry Music Festival, Changjiang Midi Festival, Rizhao Ocean Music, etc. with several bands.
In 2012, he held a solo concert with Guo Zhiyong, guitarist in Tomahawk, at Mao Live House and participated in the Sanbao Musical ” Wanderings of Three-Hairs the Orphan “
In 2014, after returning to Guangdong, he formed The Oval band and held special band concerts in various music centers, cultural stations, music festivals, etc., and released many original songs on Netease Cloud, QQ Music and other platforms
In 2019, he was invited by Martin, the German Consul General in Guangzhou, to join the GuangZhou Soul Project band and participate in various cultural exchange performances.
In 2020, he was invited by Foshan City Library to hold a personal jazz drum teaching lecture and online concert
In 2021, he participated in the Guangdong Pearl River Channel Band Storm program and “The Voice of Cantonese – Band Storm” on Zhujiang Channel, Guangdong.
