Journey to Chang’an: Tang Dynasty Mural Art Exhibition

December 11 @ 10:00 - December 12 @ 22:00

Step into the splendor of the Tang Dynasty (618–907) at “The Art of Murals: Unveiling the Splendor of the Tang Dynasty.” This exhibition features nearly 80 high-resolution reproductions of Tang murals and 20 replicas of iconic Tang paintings, pottery figures, and gold, silver, and porcelain artifacts, offering a vivid window into the era’s daily life, customs, aesthetics, and artistic achievements.

With few surviving Tang palaces, temples, or original paintings on paper or silk, tomb murals are a critical link to the dynasty’s visual legacy. These originals are highly sensitive to light, humidity, and temperature, so high-quality reproductions allow visitors to experience their beauty without risking damage to the artifacts.

The Tang murals, renowned for their diversity and mastery, depict solemn Buddhist imagery, grand ceremonial processions, vibrant flowers, birds, and auspicious creatures, vividly capturing the dynasty’s grandeur. Sourced from nearly 30 Tang tombs and housed by the Shaanxi History Museum, these murals are celebrated globally for their quality, quantity, detailed chronology, and exceptional preservation.

Organized by Shenzhen Publishing Group in partnership with the Shaanxi History Museum, the exhibition offers immersive virtual reality (VR) experiences. Visitors can “enter” the murals, soaring over the Tang capital Chang’an, exploring bustling markets, watching polo matches, joining imperial hunting parties, and immersing themselves in the Tang world’s magnificence.

Guided tours led by Shaanxi History Museum experts will explore the historical, artistic, and cultural significance of the murals. Lectures and activities are also available to deepen visitors’ appreciation of Tang mural art and the era’s cultural legacy.
