Introduction

“Magneto” Ian McLean at the age of 80 again starred in “King Lear”,
one of Shakespeare’s double peaks, a ticket hard to find

King Lear

If you’re looking for a textbook version of “King Lear,” it’s this one from one of the best actors in the world today, Ian McLean!

The 80-year-old Sir Ian McLean is deeply rooted in the hearts of people with roles such as Gandalf and Magneto,
and is the most outstanding Shakespeare actor in the world today.
In more than half a century of acting career, he played most of the main roles in “King Lear”,
and more than once played King Lear.
At the time of this revival, his age was quite close to the age of the characters in the original work,
which injected a deeper understanding.
The Guardian praised McClain’s performance as “smart, sober, and detailed”,
while The Times called it “nuanced and powerful.”

After opening at the Chichester Festival Theatre in 2017, sold-out sales have propelled the five-star production all the way to the West End stage.
Director Jonathan Mumby offers a contemporary adaptation of Shakespeare’s brutal, violent, yet delicate and compassionate play.

King Lear, one of the twin peaks of Shakespeare’s play, tells an ancient version of the story of separation.
The old and faint-hearted King Lear was coaxed by his false and flattering eldest and second daughters,
and decided all the soil to be given to them, but nothing was given to the upright little daughter Cordelia.
Unexpectedly, after the family separation, King Lear was treated coldly and humiliated at the homes of his eldest and second daughters,
and even wandered in the wilderness during a storm.
Lear was mad, but he knew better than ever what was right and what was wrong.
Cordelia, who became the Queen of France, came to rescue her father, and the wicked were all punished,
but Cordelia was also killed, and King Lear died beside her sadly.

The Chichester Festival Theatre, which produced this revival, is an iconic regional theatre in the UK,
known for its high quality of performances, collaborations with local communities, young artists, and often the opportunity to transfer productions to London.
