CHAI @ B10 LIVE – Nanshan

July 14, 2023 @ 8:30 pm

Four girls, the Miracle Twins Mana and Kana and the super rhythm section Yuki and Yuna, formed Chai in Nagoya, calling themselves “NEO – New Exciting Women Band”.

In their initial work, they combined elements of punk, hip-hop, electronica and a little bit of Japanese pop to announce to the world their cute, inclusive, colourful and unrestricted “NEO KAWAII”.

Their debut studio album ‘PINK’ received critical acclaim and quickly broke the circle. 2020 saw CHAI participate in Gorillaz’s new album and sign with US record label SUB POP, accelerating their worldwide activities.

However, it’s not just their out-of-the-box vows that make them stand out; their music is just as powerful, as the popular commentary at the bottom of the NPR show put it:

brennanchris252(3 years ago):

“Their rhythm is fantastic and I would even pay to see a show with just a bassist and drummer if I had the chance.”

Daniel Connor(3 years ago):

“The energy of this band is strange to the point of making me uncomfortable, but I have to say I’m enjoying it immensely at the same time.”

Their impact has seen CHAI rise to prominence on the international stage and in 2018 they took to the SXSW festival stage and completed a world tour.

At the end of the same year, Pitchfork named them the only Asian artist on its album of the year list, alongside the likes of Arctic Monkeys, Beach House and Cat Power.

In the following years, CHAI didn’t limit their music to ‘punch’, and in 2021 they created the R&B-infused single ‘Maybe Chocolate Chips’, with the song’s main theme being ‘when people imagine moles as chocolates, do they fall in love with them’.

The song is also CHAI’s first collaboration with another musician, Chicago-based rapper Ric Wilson, whom CHAI watched perform onstage at the 2019 Pitchfork Music Festival.

Then, last year, when the band members realised that they might have been struggling to make people think they were fun, they created the single ‘Nobody Knows We Are Fun’, this time moving away from the colourful, bright style of CHAI to a darker but groovy electronic dance track.

“Just making loud rock music and performing exaggerated concerts doesn’t prove anything, you are who you were born to be and express yourself naturally in your own world – the world will be drawn to you.”

CHAI are constantly pushing themselves further and further, but every time they transform, they surprise us as listeners, and the narrow sense of “cute” is stomped into the ground as they bounce from one amazing performance to the next.

All we need to do is to see what they will continue to bring.
