Celebrate Lantern Festival with concerts, drama

A series of concerts featuring traditional Chinese music and Western classical music will be held across the city this weekend to celebrate the Lantern Festival. In addition, the Chinese stage play “Memories of Matsuko” will transport audiences into a woman’s bizarre life.

Chinese, Western pieces 

The Futian Symphony Orchestra will present a night of traditional Chinese folk music and easy-listening Western classical pieces, such as Rachmaninoff’s “Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, Op. 43,” and Saint-Saëns’ “The Swan.”

Trumpet, piano

On Friday, a trumpet concert performed by Chinese musicians will feature Foster’s “Blazing Bugles,” Ewazen’s “Triofor Trumpet, Violin and Piano,” Colombier’s “Emmanuel,” an aria from Bizet’s “Carmen,” and Gershwin’s “Summertime.” Then, on Saturday, sought-after pianist and teacher Yuan Fang will perform Beethoven’s “Moonlight Sonata,” Schubert’s “Three Piano Pieces, D. 946,” Gershwin’s “Preludes for Piano,” Debussy’s “Clair de Lune,” Liszt’s “Hungarian Rhapsody, S. 244, No. 2,” and Chinese folk song “In a Place Far Far Away.”

Chinese folk tunes

The Huayun Chinese Music Orchestra will play Chinese folk tunes spotlighting the pipa, dongxiao, suona, and other traditional Chinese instruments.

Chinese TV drama songs

Dreamwin, a traditional Chinese music orchestra from Guangzhou, will present three concerts featuring songs from popular Chinese period dramas. The musicians will be dressed in traditional Chinese costumes, transporting audience members into the past with mesmerizing tunes from beloved TV dramas such as “A Dream of Splendor,” “Story of Yanxi Palace,” “Lost You Forever,” “The Story of Ming Lan,” “The Untamed,” and “The Longest Day in Chang’an.”

Chinese folk music

Shenzhen Theater’s Chinese music orchestra will play a night of Chinese folk tunes composed by esteemed masters including Liu Tianhua, Zhao Jiping, and Guan Naizhong. Featuring the erhu, Chinese flute, suona, and other traditional Chinese instruments, the program promises to infuse the Lantern Festival with a joyous vibe.

Western classical tunes

The Unicorn, a chamber music orchestra consisting of Chinese graduates from Yale School of Music, Royal Academy of Music, Oberlin Conservatory of Music, Central Conservatory of Music, and New England Conservatory of Music, will perform easy-listening Western classical pieces such as Shostakovich’s “Waltz No. 2,” Bizet’s “Carmen Overture,” Monti’s “Csárdás,” and Elgar’s “Salut d’amour.”

‘Memories of Matsuko’

Chinese TV actress Deng Jiajia will take center stage in the Chinese-language drama “Memories of Matsuko,” a production based on the 2006 Japanese film of the same name. The story centers on Matsuko, a forgotten outcast leading a bizarre life.
