BAIHUI 1 Year Anniversary

July 30, 2022 @ 10:00 pm 11:59 pm

Born in 2021, the new online music platform Baihui BAIHUI lives up to its name. It is the intersection of many rivers and veins, connecting cultural and musical groups across China, and gathering rich and diverse voices. From here, open your ears and your mind, roam along the way, go back all the way, after thousands of things, you will meet more possibilities, and eventually flow to your own lake and sea.

From 2:00 pm on June 20, 2021, BAIHUI Baihui sent the first sound wave to the world, and every Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday, the latest music programs of various genres have been broadcast here. DJs, musicians, music labels, party promoters and media from all over the country gathered their thoughts and inspirations on BAIHUI, surging into a wave of anticipation.

-Line Up-

Chiyokoo

Kehua North Road Boy Scouts and one of the cue crew members. As the owner of the regular dodecahedron, he is good at showing a variety of musical styles to create independent spaces that change in real time and create different storm scenes. When the sound wave hits, the electric current penetrates the whole body – the melatonin that is permanently moving in the pineal gland, the body that is overworked by dancing, the salty taste of tears will explode the whole brain! ATTENTION! Please gather at the center of the dance floor immediately and experience an unprecedented time and space transition! And feel the dizzy state transmitted by the unknown signal.

Hotwill

Hotwill has been active in Beijing’s underground electronic music scene as Negative808, and is good at bombing the dance floor with the energy of high-speed BPM such as Drum n Bass, Footwork, and Juke. Negative808’s name has also appeared in the releases of Ran Music, S!LK, Seipprlabel and DCYY (go here), and is one of the few Chinese producers who have explored Footwork music in the field of music production.

Returning to himself, Hotwill has thrown away the shackles of BPM and explored the boundaries of traditional club music and bass music in a more diverse field. As a music technology researcher and promoter, Hotwill has developed a personal awareness of music with his in-depth research on software/hardware – even if he drifts between different music genres, he can deliver shocking low-frequency energy.

Hotwill (aka Negative808) is a Beijing bass producer who hails from the southern Chinese province of Fujian. He has had several singles released on the Beijing based electronic label Ran Music. Since living in the capital he has integrated various upbeat electronic dance styles into his work; such as Drum & Bass, Grime, Footwork and Juke. On many occasions he has taken part in events thrown by one of China’s most respected Drum & Bass DJ collectives – Syndicate, and also as a resident DJ of Beijing pioneer club music collectives – S!LK.

In addition to being an avant-garde creator, Negative808 is also a behind the scenes promoter and supporter of the Chinese electronic music community. Along with fellow producer, EZZZ, he is a founding member of the online electronic music media platform, FreqLab. Negative808 is well known to the young electronic musicians in China as a regular contributor to the music technology review platform Midifan. Aside from being a producer, Hotwill is also an active DJ in the Beijing underground scene. He consistently presents workshops on Ableton Live and electronic music production in conjunction with Floso x Ran Music.

Knopha

Few DJs (let alone China) can navigate the wide range of music genres like Knopha. It might sound like a cliché, but he’s just about smashing warehouse parties with breakbeat techno while delivering soft, ethereal music at the same time.

With this versatility (meaning a technical prowess to resist and an uncanny appetite for finding different styles of tricky music), Knopha has earned a place in the Chinese underground dance music scene. He did it in a typical sneaky way – the first few years of show were sparse and irregular, taking care of his own Beatween parties in between (guests from Orpheu The Wizard, MNDSGN, Yu Su, Mr Ho, Pender Street Steppers, Bell Towers, PLO Man…), while quietly digging into music and fine-tuning the production. So when Efdemin, Hodge, Laurel Halo, Dixon, Project Pablo and other artists came to China, Knopha became the best person to fuel the fire. Then, after a series of headliner appearances in Guest House, Elevator, 宀 (Hong Kong), Savage (Hanoi), Darker Than Wax (Singapore), etc., he was given the opportunity to show a completely different style from the warm-up, facing the other side of the peak time. On the one hand – he’s not only a strong supporter, he’s also hiding a depth charge that ignites the dance floor. Lying behind the DJ booth, he has a keen perception of the surrounding environment and personnel, and adjusts the rhythm of different forms synchronously with the change of group energy.

Knopha’s Eating Music label’s <Nothing Nil> EP released in late 2018 (to his own surprise) received rave reviews, including Hessle Audio’s Ben UFO. After Ben visited Oil (Shenzhen) to experience his live, he invited Knopha to record a guest mix for his label’s program on Rinse FM. Previously, Knopha also provided a mix of his own for Redlight Radio, Pender Street Steppers’ NTS radio show. This June, his promotional tour for his new EP <Gym> released by Zai Ran Music is about to start.

What to expect when Knopha DJs? The best solution is to not have any expectations. Maybe you can imagine natural rhythms, psychedelic twists, head-shaking percussion, heady melodies—flowing simultaneously as an unbroken narrative. Oh, and his beard!

Few DJs on the globe – let alone China – traverse musical worlds as fluently as Knopha. It sounds like a cliche, but he is literally as comfortable smashing a warehouse rave with broken techno, as he is channeling the gentle seaside ambient vibe of his adopted hometown Xiamen.

It’s with this versatility (meaning both technical skills and a monster appetite to find different styles of incredible music) that Knopha has earned a place in the top tier of Chinese dance music. He’s done it in a characteristically sneaky way – just a few years ago , gigs were few and far between besides his own impeccably curated Beatween events (Orpheu The Wizard, MNDSGN, Yu Su, Mr Ho, Pender Street Steppers, Bell Towers, PLO Man and others). Noone knew how hard he was digging, and learning a production craft. When they caught on, things moved fast – Knopha quickly become the go-to to support cutting edge acts across the country (Efdemin, Hodge, Laurel Halo, Dixon, Project Pablo). But now, after headlining nights himself with Elevator (Shanghai), Minh (HK), Savage (Hanoi), TAG (Chengdu), Zhao Dai (Beijing), Loopy (Hangzhou),and Darker Than Wax (SG), it’s dawned on bookers and ravers alike, that he’s not just a strong support – he had been hiding peak-time bombs all along.

The Nothing Nil EP, released on Eating Music in late 2018, brought praise from major players including Hessle Audio boss Ben UFO. When Ben came to Oil in Shenzhen, he heard Knopha’s warmup and immediately invited him to record a set for Hessle’s legendary Rinse FM show. Other standout sets include Red Light Radio and NTS for Pender Street Steppers, each showing a different side of the selector. This summer, Knopha will tour 7 Chinese cities in support of his new EP ‘Gym’, released on Ran Music.

What to expect from a Knopha set? Safest not to expect at all – but if you must, think organic rhythms, psychedelic turns, head-snapping percussion and entrancing melody – flowing together as part of one unbroken narrative. And a mustache.
