7/6 Summer Ball: Duke Ellington’s Swinging Years

July 6, 2022 @ 8:00 pm

”It Don’t Mean A Thing, If it Ain’t Got That Swing,” the jazz standard was one of the first pieces to include the word ”swing” in its title. Duke Ellington composed the tune during an intermission of a big band dance performance in Chicago. Legend has it that no one danced until he introduced the song to the crowd.

Duke Ellington’s Swinging Years
Swing music gave birth to Swing Dance, as one can’t get around the work of Duke Ellington when entering the world of swing music, it’s fair to say that Duke Ellington has been the inspirational source of Swing Dance. Duke Ellington had such a long musical career that he spanned decades and multiple jazz genres that some of his music may not actually be swing dance music, it may be Hot Jazz, Be-Bop or other music; but the feeling of swing has always been an underlying musical influence.

The Swing era saw the invention of hundreds of swing dances, including the famous Lindy hop, which became popular at the historic Savoy Ballroom in Harlem, New York. Like musicians, swing dancers use call and response to communicate with each other through movement.

”If jazz means anything, it’s the freedom of expression.” Duke Ellington defied categorization and refused to conform to any preconceived notions about what he or his music should contribute. Indeed, one of his greatest compliments was to describe the artist as “beyond category”. We invite you to break into the Swing era with his music.
