The authority of the conductor is not brought by the profession, but by the tolerance and trust of the orchestra.

Standing on the square-inch stage, there is no need to make a sound, the left hand is waving, and the right hand is holding the baton. With the rhythmic waving of both hands, the symphony orchestra of more than 100 people will make harmonious and unified music one after another, either deep and melodious, or passionate and intertwined. , sometimes like a trickle, sometimes like a galloping horse… With the change of the mood of the music, he sometimes frowned, leaned slightly, sometimes smiled, and waved his arms wildly. More than 10 kinds of expressions can be expressed in just 5 seconds. A transformation takes place inside his face… This is the daily work of Lin Daye, the conductor of the Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra.Image

When I was a child, my father brought back a video tape from the reference room – “Beethoven Symphony” conducted by the famous German-Austrian conductor Herbert von Karajan (Herbert von Karajan). Lin Daye was greatly shocked, “I just pointed to the conductor on the screen and said that I would become such a person in the future. ” A “joke” of a young child was firmly kept in his heart by his father. In the film, his father gave Lin Daye extremely strict music training and supported him on his career as a conductor.
Since 1995, Lin Daye has been under the tutelage of Professor Xu Xin, a conducting educator of the Central Conservatory of Music, Professor Zhang Guoyong of the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, and Professor Christian Ewald of the Hanns Eisler Academy of Music in Berlin, Germany. diploma. Lin Daye has spent his student life in Shanghai Conservatory of Music and Germany, the “Music Capital”.

Although he only won the fourth place, he was quickly hired as an assistant conductor due to the recognition of the Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra. After graduating from Germany, Lin Daye chose to return to his motherland to display his talents. In 2010, after working in Hangzhou Philharmonic for one year, Lin Daye came to Guangzhou Symphony Orchestra and served as permanent conductor for five years. He learned a lot of knowledge about orchestra operation and art management from the famous Chinese conductor Yu Long. In 2016, 36-year-old Lin Daye became the music director and chief conductor of the Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra.

what is commandSpeaking of conducting, the image of a highly respected and gray-haired old man often comes to mind. “36 years old, the music director of a professional orchestra, is too young for the country and the world.” This achievement It was also the biggest difficulty for Lin Daye at the time. How could a young conductor manage a huge orchestra?
“When you stand in the center of the stage, the music moves with your body movements. The majestic sound brought by an orchestra with more than one hundred people is very enjoyable. This moment is also the moment for you to release your charm. “, Lin Daye enjoys the charm of the conductor on the stage, and he prefers the fun brought by the rehearsal before the concert.
In Lin Daye’s view, rehearsal is like playing with Lego, where parts that look like nothing are scattered all over the floor, piled up and interspersed little by little through drawings, and finally become an amazing work of art. “This is very similar to the rehearsal of the orchestra. The strings are spliced together, the winds are spliced together, each voice and each rhythm are perfectly spliced, and when it is presented on the stage, it is the time to release the charm.”

▲On September 7, 2019, the Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra performed in Castello, Italy. The conductor is the only role in the entire orchestra that does not make a sound. In the rehearsal process from disorder to order, from disorder to order, from discord to harmony, the conductor is like a coordinator, a conductor, “transforming the composer’s The score is the conductor that communicates with body language to each musician, and the conductor that conveys the performance of the orchestra to the audience.”
In this way, the conductor has to rely on his own professional skills to make the orchestra perform at a uniform speed, orderly, complete and harmonious. Because of this, the conductor has a natural “leader” aura, but Lin Daye knows very well that “the authority of the conductor is not It is brought by the profession, but endowed by the tolerance and trust of the orchestra.”
For a young conductor, the most important and difficult challenge is to conduct a senior orchestra. “The musicians sitting in the orchestra may be the musicians of your teachers and parents. You have to give instructions to tell him how to play. At this time, there is a psychological game.”
How to overcome this barrier? “Your original intention is to love music, you are persistent in music, and you have perseverance to make music well. This kind of emotion can infect every musician, and many things will be solved.” Lin Daye knew , the vast majority of musicians do not rank seniority based on age, but more on musical talent.
The richer the work experience, the more Lin Daye feels that conducting is a comprehensive art. In addition to professional art knowledge, it also involves psychology, philosophy, history, politics, etc. A good conductor is by no means just working hard and not asking about world affairs. did it.

Fate with ShenzhenThe 42-year-old Lin Daye is almost the same age as Shenzhen. In fact, he has always had an inseparable relationship with Shenzhen along the way. Teacher Zhang Guoyong was the first music director of the Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra when he was in college, and Professor Christian Ewald from Germany was the former director of the Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra.
In 2016, when Lin Daye became the music director of the Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra, Nie Bing, the head of the orchestra at the time, gave Lin Daye enough tolerance and support just like the city of Shenzhen. As an old member of the orchestra, Nie Bing has witnessed the entire development process of the orchestra, “In the process of professionalization of the Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra, the head of the Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra, Nie Bing, is the driver, leading the development direction of the orchestra. I am like an engine, full of vitality , full of motivation, and keep moving forward.” With the tacit cooperation of Lin Daye and Nie Bing, the industry has witnessed the rapid progress of the Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra in recent years.

▲On August 23, 2016, Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra 2016/2017 Music Season Opening Concert, photo with Mr. Nie Bing.Beginning in 2020, the performing arts industry, such as symphony, which relies on audiences to enter the concert hall to survive, has been hit hard. Lin Daye led the Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra to find another way, starting from scratch, recording and video recording in the rehearsal hall, opening up online concerts, and gaining a good reputation in the industry. With the resumption of offline performances, online performances still continue, and the two lines go hand in hand. “Even if the concert hall is full, there will not be more than 2,000 people, but our online concerts can run throughout the country and even the world. Every concert There are tens of thousands of listeners.”
Talking about the future of Shenzhen and the orchestra, Lin Daye believes that Shenzhen is a city standing on the shoulders of giants, and the Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra is also an orchestra standing on the shoulders of giants. Orchestra, Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, Leipzig Symphony Orchestra, it is indeed too young, but it has avoided many historical problems left by its predecessors, and grew up in this city that has created miracles in just 40 years. “I believe that when When the Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra is 50 or 60 years old, it will definitely make greater strides, and its distance from the world will also be getting closer.”

The future of the symphony

Image

▲ On April 11, 2021, the 7th China Symphony Spring will be performed at the National Center for the Performing Arts. When it comes to symphony, the thought of walking into a concert hall, wearing a formal dress, not being able to ring your cell phone, and not being able to walk around at will is unavoidably daunting. Lin Daye pointed out that the threshold for symphony music is indeed relatively high, which is determined by the characteristics of symphony music, because it has many changes and rich layers, and background noise or occasional discordant sounds can easily cover up the wonderful nature of symphony music. Partly, so, those requirements can be understood to create an atmosphere for everyone to enjoy music.
“I really don’t understand, I’m afraid I’ll fall asleep when I listen to it…” For audiences with similar concerns, in Lin Daye’s view, “Why do you need to understand music! Just like when you walk into a restaurant, you only need to taste Delicious food does not need to understand how it is made, that is the task of the chef. Even if people take a 10-minute nap to obtain spiritual liberation, this is an effect in itself.”
What is good music? “Music that can make people empathize is good music. When you hear this music, you suddenly think of a childhood memory, beautiful, painful, unforgettable, or make you cry, or laugh…Love Musicians are very sensitive to music, and you are already amazing.”

▲The poster of the 2019 Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra’s concert in Erlangen, Germany.Walking into European concert halls and opera houses, the audience is almost all gray-haired old people, but China is different. Many young people enter the concert hall to listen to classical music. This makes Lin Daye’s foreign music friends can’t help but sigh “classical music China’s future is in China!” After each performance, Lin Daye would communicate with the audience on the spot, and he found that the audience of classical music in Shenzhen is particularly wide, including doctors, students, architects, industry barriers, and perhaps the core of many things. are interlinked.
Although the audience is wide, for Shenzhen with a population of 18 million, there are not many people who love classical music. To this end, the Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra has made some interesting attempts. They walked out of the concert hall, walked into the community, parks, schools, and walked into the streets and alleys, playing “Peppa Pig” in the form of string quartet and woodwind quintet The theme songs of “Doraemon” and “Journey to the West” let everyone first understand the symphony, become interested in it, and slowly enter the concert hall on their own initiative. Let the symphony be grounded, add national musical instruments to the symphony, integrate symphonic accompaniment into popular music…the future development of the orchestra has unlimited possibilities.

▲On February 1, 2020, the poster for the concert of Lin Daye conducting the Nuremberg Symphony Orchestra in Germany. How can the world know about the Chinese Symphony Orchestra? “Get recognized first, and then interpret China’s own things.” Lin Daye believes that this is a principle followed by the Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra when it tours abroad. “Being able to play the music of the visited country vividly brings us closer The distance between the musicians of the two countries, after being recognized, we will play our own music. At this time, everyone’s recognition of the music culture is quite high.”
After the creation of the original work “My Motherland” by the Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra, the orchestra toured to Nuremberg, Germany, and asked the local chorus members to sing in Chinese, “When the seventh movement sounded the melody that all Chinese people are familiar with’a big river is wide and wide’ The strong shock, the deep emotion, my heart still beats faster when I recall it…” Lin Daye still couldn’t help the red eyes when recalling this performance.

Image

▲On September 10, 2019, Zhang Qianyi performed “My Motherland” in Nuremberg. The magnificence of the land of China was sung in a foreign country, and the Chinese and overseas Chinese present were all in tears, and many German audiences were also moved by it. “Thank you very much for bringing Chinese culture here. I finally feel a sense of pride that I have never had before.” After the performance, many Chinese who have lived in Germany for more than 30 years expressed their gratitude to the Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra with tears in their eyes.
“In the past, German symphony orchestras came to perform in China, and the venues were full. Now we can use our own works, in the form of symphonies, to export them abroad in reverse, and get high praise. I think this is also the reason for the existence of Chinese symphony orchestras. meaning.” Lin Daye said.
